STATE COMPETITION IS RESCHEDULED!

Hi everyone! Merry Christmas! Happy new year!

I have good news for everyone! The state competition has been rescheduled. This means that there will be no lottery to go to world, and instead we will have an actual competition! The competition will be on March 8, 2014 (just in time for my birthday). We have three more months to practice!

Happy holidays!

App for SidewalkHeat

Hi everyone! I’ve been working on an Android app called SidewalkHeat instead of going onto a web browser. It will still work on the web browser, but this is an extra touch to make it easier.

Here is the prototype download:

SidewalkHeat.apk

Updated version v1.1: SidewalkHeatv101.apk

Mac version: SidewalkHeat.app

After downloading the file, you can copy it into your Android device and use a APK installer app from the Play Store. If there are any problems, please notify me.

UPDATE (11/27/13):

I’ve made a new update (v1.1) that automatically connects to the PiProject network. We still need to do some testing on this though.

I have put the link above and here:

SidewalkHeatv101.apk

UPDATE (11/29/13):

I’ve made a new app for Macs. I did some testing and it works!

I have put the link above and here:

Meeting on 10/3/13

The STEM Club had a great meeting on the 3rd. We started off by welcoming the newcomers and passing out the role choosing sheets. Just a reminder, the mission and project roles are all out.

After we got that sorted out, we showed the progress for the FLL robot that is going to be in the competition. This year, our robot has a modular design to help prevent the long times that it took for the attachments on the robot to go on and off last year. With the new modular design, the robot only has to be “unplugged” from one base and “plugged” into another base.

Then, the project team took a turn to show their progress. They chose blizzards as their topic and people slipping on sidewalks as their problem. Their solution so far is a solar powered heated walkway. Now, all that’s left is to build it!

There was a long period of idea generating after that. There were many ideas that we came up with, ranging from a lightning collector for additional power to contacting news stations from outreach. Finally, we watched some videos.

All in all, this meeting was very successful. We showed our progress, gave our team members a chance for idea generation, and showed some videos.

STEM Back at School

Hi everyone! We need to decide our schedule of meetings back at school. We also need to gather some ideas for the club fair. Also, we need to start brainstorming about what we want to do after FLL ends. If anyone has any ideas, please comment about them. Also, if you could comment which days you are available, that would be great! Me and Ashton will be meeting to decide which day we will meet, and we need your input!

See you back at school! I’ll keep you posted!

STEM Meeting 7/12 Information

I hope you guys had a great Fourth Of July! First of all, our meeting will be from 10:30 to 12:30, but just for that Friday. To get in, just go to the Washington Place entrance and ring the bell. There are a few things that we are going to discuss on Friday. We will talk about our very successful fundraising on the Fourth of July, we will talk about our project (narrowing down topics/problems), and finally, we will do some work with simple machines and programming. We also might have the high school girl that was part of the FTC team that came during our open house come to talk. For everyone who wasn’t able to come during our July 4th fundraiser, we have our t-shirts for you! Again our next meeting will be on July 12 at 10:30 to 12:30 in Mrs. Kuiken’s room. See you there!

July 4th Fundraising

Hello everyone! We had a huge success fundraising on July 4th! In total, we made $385! Congratulations! This money will definitely help us with our expenses for STEM Club!

Everyone worked really hard in fundraising. In the morning, we split up into 4 groups. Each group had an ice box and signs. After a lot of hard work, each group made around $30 to $60! When we counted all the money, we had over $150! That was almost as much as we made in our bake sale!

We had the biggest success at night! Everyone gathered in the parking lot of Kings at 6 o’ clock. The team went around the parking lot and on the street, calling out what we were selling. “Glow sticks! 2 for a dollar! Get your water, glow sticks, ice pops, and soda here!” We sold more than a cooler of water! By the end of the night, our money bags were stuffed. The fireworks at the end of the night celebrated our success of the day.

Here are some pictures that we took during our fundraising events:

Second Meeting!

Hi everyone! We missed the people who weren’t able to attend. We’re planning to have another short meeting soon, either this Friday or Monday. This meeting is extremely important! We’re going to go through how to keep in touch during the summer! Please come to this meeting! We’ll keep you posted about when the meeting is.

Today we covered three things. This year’s project, two of our fundraising events, and how to blog.

In the beginning of our meeting, we looked at a project video by the Inventioneers, a team that won the World Championships a couple years before! This great video does a really good job of explaining how to really complete our project. It talks about how to and why to do this really fun and informative part of FLL.

After we saw the video, we talked about this year’s challenge for the project. This year’s topic is called Nature’s Fury. We have to find a natural disaster to research as a team and find a solution to it. We also talked about different types of natural disasters. The link to the website of this year’s topic is http://firstlegoleague.org/challenge/2013naturesfury.

Then, we talked about our first two fundraising events. We have planned two events to get money for our team T-shirts! The first event will be the end of school fundraiser. For this event, we’re going to sell desserts. Your parents should make 12 small bags of desserts (cookies, brownies, Rice Krispies treats, etc.) with two pieces in each bag.

Our second event will be the 4th of July fundraiser. We’re going to sell water in this fundraiser. Please buy two 24 packs of 16.9 ounce water bottles for us to sell. During this fundraiser, we’ll be wearing our T-shirts proudly.

For both of the fundraisers, please bring the fundraising items to Mrs. Kuiken’s room (#104).

After that, we talked about the blog. Everyone tested out how the blog works, and we even made a few posts! Just click the “How to Blog” tab, sign in with the username and password we emailed to you, and the power of the website will be under your fingertips! You can blog anything here, from your thoughts about the meeting to the ideas you have.

That wraps up our second official STEM Club meeting! Don’t forget to find a natural disaster that you want to research and blog a little about it for “homework”! That kicks off the project section of FLL!

Thanks for being in the STEM Club!

Fundraising

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the bake sale! We made $171! This is a great help.

We have a couple details for our July 4th fundraiser. First, we meet at 9:00 AM at Westside Bagels and Deli. The address is 2 Wilsey Square Ridgewood, NJ 07450. There, we will dispatch everyone to our fundraising locations. We will have a station at GW, Westside Bagels, the library, and the corner of E. Ridgewood and N. Maple Avenue.

Everyone needs to bring a poster advertising water and glow sticks for a dollar. Also, everyone needs to bring a 24 pack of 16.9 (big) ounce water bottles, and a cooler or wagon per pair. Please comment on this blog if you can come and bring these things.

We’ll keep you updated by blog and email! Have a great weekend!

Thanks for being in the STEM Club!
